Juice Feasting- Day 2 | Raw Vegan Radio

Juice Feasting- Day 2

Juice Feasting- Day 2

by Steve Prussack
Host of Raw Vegan Radio

I made it through the second day of juice feasting and for the most part, felt great today.  My energy was pretty high, and was able to get a lot of work done around the house.  The weather was unusually hot today in Southern California, so we took advantage with a walk along Santa Monica Pier.  There were moments that were not so easy, especially when walking past restaurants and watching my fiance prepare food for her son.  Those are the moments that are hard right now, but I am sure they will get easier as the Feast progresses.  I have read that the first 3 days are the hardest, so I am thankful to have gotten this far (which isn’t far at all, compared to how much longer I should keep this up).

Today’s Juices

1.  Carrot/ Apple/ Swiss Chard/ Ginger
2.  The Master Cleanser (Lemon, Water, Cayenne Pepper, Agave Nectar)
3.  Honeydew (SO good)
4.  Carrot/ Apple/ Purple Kale/ Parsley
(Also 1 Quart of Coconut Water)

I drank a total of 1 gallon of juice today.

Weight Loss

I have lost 2.4 pounds already.  My starting weight was 182.4, and today I am down to 180.  I am excited to lose more weight and become more lean.

Detox Symptoms

I am surprised at how much I am detoxing already.  I had a headache all through the night while I was sleeping.  I woke with a runny nose.  Other symptoms included slight nausea here and there.  I did an enema this evening, which really helped.  I scraped my tongue several times and found a lot of mucous gathering on the tip.  Even as a type this blog post, my stomach is rumbling.  I can feel my body shifting and changing.  I am amazed that our bodies start to clean out just from consuming fresh organic raw fruit and vegetable juices.

Vivid Dreams

Last night, I had some very vivid dreams.  I have heard others have had similar experience during a juice feast.  In one dream, I was talking to the spirit of all plants.  She was showing me how difficult I was as a child at times.  She explained to me that it wasn’t my fault, and I just didn’t know better.  Also, she told me my fiance Julie could have chosen many other paths in life.  I am glad our paths led us back to each other after over 20 years apart (we were high school sweethearts and reunited 2 years ago).

I am looking forward to the rest of this journey…I am not sure how many days I can do before my body says enough…but it would be great if I could make it the whole 92 days (no promises).

Juice Feasting- Day 3 | Raw Vegan Radio

Juice Feasting- Day 3

Juice Feasting- Day 3

by Steve Prussack
Host of Raw Vegan Radio

They say the first 3 days of Juice Feasting is the most difficult.  If that is true, I am grateful to have made it through the day.  It was definitely not always easy though.  I felt like my head was in a cloud for the first part of the day.  This was NOT good timing, as I had an important meeting with a pretty large group and not sure how I came off.  I felt dizzy at times.  Later in the day, my energy returned and I felt really good.  Then, to my surprise, I underwent some heavy detoxing.  My body released a considerable amount of toxins, and it felt amazing.  I am shocked to be detoxing so much so quickly, but it reaffirms my decision to go through this long-term cleanse.  I actually had to pause from writing this blog post to detox some more.  Not fun…but better out than in.

My Juices Today

1.  Carrot/ Apple/ Parsley/ Spinach
2.  Honeydew
3.  Celery, Cucumber, Spinach, Kale (Yay! I am finally able to have a REAL green juice)
4.  The Master Cleanse (Lemon, Water, Cayenne Pepper, Agave Nectar)
1/2 Quart Coconut Water

I drank a total of 1.5 Gallons of Juice today.

Weight Loss

I have lost 3.4 pounds on this cleanse so far. I now weight 179, down from initial weight of 182.4.

Random Thoughts

All in all, I am happy with the progress on this cleanse.  I try not to think ahead about how long I will be doing this, and find it easier to take it day by day.  I have been thoroughly enjoying David Rain’s Juice Feasting website at http://www.juicefeasting.com.  There are daily videos and other inspirations to keep motivated throughout the cleanse.  I play the videos while I am making my juices in the morning.  I have to say, making the juices takes a considerable amount of time.  I make the juices for me and Julie, so that may be why it’s taking so long.  Julie joins me for some of the prep and juices when she can, which helps a lot.  Julie has decided to break the cleanse tomorrow, so I’ll be continuing on my own.  It takes me about 3 hours to juice for the entire day at this point.  I am sure when I am making juice just for me, it will be much less.  I’ll let you know.

Other challenges today:  Julie was making a vegan hot dog for her son and it smelled really good.  I needed to distract myself, so had a coconut during this time.  Since my body is getting everything it needs, it really becomes a psychological challenge to stay motivated.  I start to think about wanting solid foods, but it passes.  Also, the idea of snacking has become difficult.  I would often have a snack at certain times of the day, and now I feel a little empty during those times.

A long road ahead….but I am hoping the cravings for solid food is gone for now.

Juice Feasting- Day 13

Juice Feasting- Day 13

by Steve Prussack
Host of Raw Vegan Radio

Today met with a busy schedule which made the cleanse more challenging.  While my energy was good throughout the day, I did have some cravings out of nowhere.  The idea of eating again was starting to seem very appealing to me.  While I didn’t succumb to any temptations, the thoughts were more strong than usual.  I came up with a decision on how long I would like to do the Juice Feast.  I will talk more about that in today’s post.  But first….

Juices of the Day

1.  Celery/ Spinach/ Kale/ Cucumber
2.  Pineapple/ Grape/ Ginger
3.  Honeydew
4.  Cilantro/ Celery/ Apple/ Carrot

I drank 1 Gallon of Juice today.  After speaking to my friend Dr. Jameth Sheridan, I decided to add another supplement to my Vitamineral Green.  Dr. Jameth recommended I add Vitamineral Earth as a tea.  After drinking it, I could sense how powerful this product is for detoxification and balance.  I haven’t had a reaction yet, I drank it only an hour ago.

Weight Loss

I remain at 173 lbs today, for a total weight loss of 9 lbs since beginning the Juice Feast.   (starting weight was 182.4).

Got Energy?

I had great energy throughout the day today.  I decided to go to the gym for some light weight training.  I brought along a bottle of Vitamineral Green to drink in between sets, and this worked out really well.  I am going to keep exercising everyday now.  I think it will help me to calm some of the excess energy I have (plus it’s great to get in the habit).  I was working out inconsistently before the Juice Feast, but am not committed to make it a daily part of my routine.  My exercises include rebounding for cardiovascular and lifting weights.  When the weather is warmer, I include bike riding and roller blading.

In other news, I officially announced that my company is putting together a Raw Food World Summit called “Rawpalooza”, which will launch in mid-January.  While I haven’t announced the line up yet, stay tuned…we have a list of close to 50 raw food/ conscious living World-Class leaders and experts signed up for the event.  This will take place online, virtually, so you can enjoy it from the comfort of your home.  Stay in touch for more details.

OK, so I decided today I am going to Juice Cleanse for a total of 30 days.  While the protocol recommends 92 days, this modified version just feels right for me.  I may change my mind at some point and decide to go longer, but this is how I am feeling today.  First, I feel disconnected from bonding with my family during meals.  Second, I am going to make Juice Feasting a big part of my life (meaning I will do this a few times a year).  Third, this is getting expensive.  I am buying top-quality organic produce at a variety of health food stores and it really starts to add up.  Again, I may change my mind.  David Rain has a criteria list for ending a Juice Feast and I am not sure I am meeting them at this point.  With the cravings today, the idea of eating food sounds so good.  I’ll confirm this decision next week, just to make sure this decision is not based on the idea that I would love to bite into an Avocado Boat.

(Note:  Avocado boats are an invention of mine.  You cut an avocado in half…take out the pit.  Sprinkle Celtic Sea Salt, Cayenne Pepper, and Nutritional Yeast on each side—-Enjoy! Kids love it too).

Thanks for sticking around…more fun tomorrow.

Juice Feasting- Day 14

Juice Feasting- Day 14

by Steve Prussack
Host of Raw Vegan Radio

Every day is different on the Juice Feast, and this one had its ups and downs.  While most of the day was met with euphoria and energy unlike before, the evening was some of the most severe detoxing since I began this program.  It was extremely difficult and my stomach is still in pain.  I wonder what is being stirred up and released.  It takes a lot of energy to have this level of deep cleansing and I am completely exhausted.  Here were the juices…

Juices of the Day

1.  Cucumber/ Celery/ Parsley/ Kale
2.  Pineapple/ Strawberry/ Ginger
3.  Honeydew
4.  Celery/ Spinach/ Kale/ Cucumber
Snack:  16 ounces of Raw Lemonade (Lemon, Water, Agave Nectar, Ginger)
Vitamineral Green Drink from HealthForce Nutritionals

I drank 1 Gallon of Juice today.

Weight Loss

I remain at 173 lbs for the second today, for a total weight loss of 9 lbs since beginning the Juice Feast.   (starting weight was 182.4).

Euphoria

I experienced a high state of euphoria for the majority of the day.  The cravings from yesterday were completely gone.  I am not sure what triggered the euphoric feelings, but it was really incredible.  It was a feeling of being high, peaceful, and filled with joy.  However, the tide turned and I experienced some severe symptoms like unlike before.

The Storm

The evening met with detoxification.  The timing couldn’t be worse, because Julie and I went to a movie (The Muppets-  We needed a light-hearted fun movie and this couldn’t have been more perfect.  If you grew up when The Muppets were popular, you will LOVE this movie.  It is definitely not just for children.  It’s a sweet and loving film.)

I had to leave the movie for a while and try to relax my stomach.  It was pretty terrible.  I am cleansing on a deep level now, there is no doubt.  I think my body is stirring up and letting go of another level of toxins that have been built up for a long time.

The interesting part of today is how great I felt early on, sort of like the calm before the storm.  I have been thinking of taking more supplements in the upcoming days to really deepen the cleanse.  I figured since I am going for 30 days, I want to get the best out of this opportunity.  I know it won’t be easy, but after tonight, I am prepared to take this to another level (seems this is what my body needs now).

While I am drained and exhausted, I am glad I didn’t neglect to post my current status.  I am not sure what tomorrow will bring, so stay tuned.

Power Juice Feast- Day 16 | Raw Vegan Radio

Power Juice Feast- Day 16

Power Juice Feast- Day 16

by Steve Prussack
Host of Raw Vegan Radio

I actually missed a day of blogging yesterday from being super tired, but I have so much great information to share today!  I had a difficult time yesterday and part of today with the re-emergence of cravings.  Maybe this is happening because the holidays are coming, and I walk the streets of LA watching people snack on food.  The restaurants pump the smells of some of my favorite comfort foods from back in the day of my SAD diet addictions.  Whatever the case, I really thought I might break the cleanse today.  I overcame the urge, but came up with a good direction so I can really go deeper with this cleanse.  I’ll tell you more about that later.  In the meantime, here are the:

Juices of the Day

1.  Cucumber/ Celery/ Dandelion Greens/ Parsley/ Cilantro (I will never mix Parsley and Cilantro again. This was tough to get down!  Too strong!)
2.  Pineapple/ Red Grapes/ Ginger
3.  Carrot/ Apple/ Celery
4.  Celery/ Spinach/ Kale/ Cucumber

I drank 1 Gallon of Juice today.

Weight Loss

I went down to 172 lbs yesterday, and remain at that weight today.  I am happy to share that I have dropped 10 lbs of toxic fat since starting this cleanse!  (starting weight was 182.4).

Got Comfort Foods?

Yesterday was hard enough, given that Julie and I went to Real Food Daily for dinner where I consumed 2 green drinks.  I asked a waitress if she felt bad for me (poor guy, only drinking juices around the holiday time).  It was tough, because the couple sitting next to us was sharing a gluten-free pizza.  I didn’t mind watching Julie eat her raw collard green wrap.  For some reason, raw foods aren’t a problem for me.  The difficulty is with the old comfort foods.  The smell…of course they make me salivate.  I know that David Rain would tell me not to put myself in these situations, but I really enjoy being in raw and vegan restaurants.

Introducing the “Power” Juice Feast

I had mentioned earlier on that my family and I are going skiing at the end of the month at Big Bear Mountain in Southern California.  I had planned to bring enough lemons to just have the Master Cleanse while on vacation, but have recently had a change in plans.  This is our first vacation as a family in two years, and I just don’t want to be in the position of detoxing while we are away.  It’s bad enough that they don’t have any veg-friendly restaurants in Big Bear…but they don’t even have a health foods store!!  So I have decided to adapt the cleanse, and am going to go a total of 23 days.  But I am not going to give up on the idea of making this more intense.  I want to experience enough cleansing to really get the most benefit.  I was talking to my friend Jameth Sheridan of HealthForce Nutritionals the other day, and it made sense to me to really amp up this cleanse.

HealthForce Nutritionals offers an incredible Healing Cleanse (3 different levels), which lasts a week long.  So beginning tomorrow, I am going to incorporate HealthForce’s Level 2 Healing Cleanse into my Juice Feast.  These cleanses are intense, but I am ready to take this to the next level.  I can’t wait to tell you how it turns out.  You can read up more on Jameth’s cleanse here:
HealthForce Nutritionals Website
(Note:  HealthForce Nutritionals are a sponsor of Raw Vegan Radio.  I receive a 15% commission on anything you purchase from their online shop.  I personally use their products and endorse them regardless)

If you are doing the cleanse with me, maybe you would like to really super-charge your cleanse too?  I have done HealthForce’s Level 3 Healing Cleanse, which is their most intense.  I had some serious detox reactions when I did that one.  Since I have already detoxed considerably in the past 16 days, I felt the Level 2 would be just sufficient.

I am planning on creating some videos of this journey this week, but my work load has been pretty intense.  While I am putting together the pieces for my upcoming “Rawpalooza” Raw Food World Summit, I am talks with “The Shift Network” to create a healthy eating summit as well.  If I wasn’t so busy with work, I would definitely attempt Level 3 again.

My Very Special Guest Host!

One last thing…my friend Cory Churko (Guitarist for Kelly Clarkson and Shania Twain) is going to be a guest host on Raw Vegan Radio this week.  He is going to interview me about this journey, so that should be a lot of fun.  I’ll let you know more about that, but to listen to Cory on Raw Vegan Radio (he was a great guest), have a listen here:
Interview with Cory Churko on Raw Vegan Radio

Thank you for stopping by, and I’ll be back tomorrow after day 17 (and day 1 of the HealthForce Healing Cleanse).  Good night…

Power Juice Feast- Day 21 | Raw Vegan Radio

Power Juice Feast- Day 21

Power Juice Feast- Day 21

by Steve Prussack
Host of Raw Vegan Radio

Another day of deep, intense cleansing and amazing on every level.  My body has been letting go of some deep-rooted toxic waste, and it is stirring up all kinds of emotions.  This leads to an increase in sensitivity, but on another level, improved perception.  I feel I can see through people, and really align myself with people I resonate with…this is a great power to have, and one I think I am possessing because of my level of clarity.  I made a short video today, which I hope to post over the weekend.

My friend Brother Echo launched the first Raw Vegan Organic Food Truck, I went to check them out, as you’ll see it in the video this weekend. He and his partner Andrew have manifested an incredible service, and I will support them as much as I can.  Their website is http://www.opensourceorganics.com and I am 100% behind these guys and their mission.

Here is their video from opening day (Note: I came by for a visit):
http://opensourceorganics.com/2011/12/17/open-source-truck-1-first-day-on-the-road/

Juices of the Day

1.  Celery/ Cucumber/ Spinach/ Cilantrore i
2.  Carrot/ Apple/ Cilantro/ Celery/ Lemon/ Parsley
3.  Beet/ Carrot/ Ginger/ Apple/ Kale

I drank 3 quarts of Juice today.  I followed the protocol for HealthForce’s Healing Cleanse Level 3 (advanced cleanse).

Weight Loss

I still weigh 172 pounds.  I have lost 10 pounds since starting the cleanse (starting weight was 182.4).  While my weight is the same, I am feeling so much lighter in my new body.  What a big difference 10 pounds make, it really is incredible.

Increased Sensitivity

As I mentioned before, I am a lot more sensitive because of the toxins being released from deep inside my body.  I want to focus on the positive vibrations, because one thing that has come up is the ability to see through people who clearly have bad intentions.  While I would usually ignore these situations, I find myself communicating my feelings directly to them (better out than in, just like with cleansing).

I’m looking forward to a weekend of more intense deep cleansing.  Hopefully, I can rid my body of these parasites and heavy metals.  Funny, no matter how healthy we eat, we are all victim to an environment that dumps a lot of poison into our bodies.  I could not recommend the  HealthForce Healing Cleanse along with juicing more…it has really made a huge difference on every level.  My eyes are clear, my mind is sharp, my energy is high, and I am feeling better prepared to meet any challenges that life may bring.

I hope this blog has served some inspiration in your own health journey.  I have been reading classic books every night, like Norman Walker’s Becoming Younger, Raw Fruit and Vegetable Juices, The Natural Way to Vibrant Health, and Natural Weight Control.  He is a true inspiration and was well ahead of his time.

Thanks for joining me here.  Your posts have been inspiring, I really appreciate the feedback and support the last 3 weeks.  Sunday will be my last day of the cleanse.  I will transition (slowly) to a 100% raw vegan diet.  Perhaps you would like to join me?

Power Juice Feast- Day 23 | Raw Vegan Radio

Power Juice Feast- Day 23

Power Juice Feast- Day 23

by Steve Prussack
Host of Raw Vegan Radio

Today is my last on the Power Juice Feast!  I just have one more set of HealthForce Nutritional Healing Herbs to take, and when I wake up tomorrow, I’ll be ending this journey.  I look forward to sharing with you the changes, and there have been a lot.  Additionally, I will post my before/ after picture tomorrow so you can see how dramatic my transformation has been in just 23 days.  I am feeling complete with the idea of ending the cleanse.  This was a great detox, and I got a lot out of my body (including a whole waist size and 12 pounds of fat!).  I will blog the next few days to keep you posted on my transition to a 100% raw vegan diet.

Here were my:

Juices of the Day

1.  Apple/ Purple Kale/ Cilantro/ Aloe Vera
2.  Pineapple/ Ginger/ Red Grape
3.  Celery/ Cucumber/ Cilantro/ Spinach/ Aloe Vera

I drank 3 quarts of Juice today.  I followed the protocol for HealthForce’s Healing Cleanse Level 3 (advanced cleanse).

Weight Loss

I lost 12 pounds in 23 days.  My weight today was 170, and starting weight was 182.  It makes a big difference.  I lost a whole pant size!  I need new clothes now, but that is not the worst reason to need a new wardrobe, right?

Final Day

I will break the cleanse tomorrow morning with mangoes!  I am excited, because I found some organic mangoes at the Santa Monica Co-op, and they are ripe and ready to go!  I had the idea to break with mangoes a while back, but wasn’t sure I would find any this time of year.  My fiance has sample them, and they are juicy and delicious.  I wouldn’t want to break this cleanse with any other fruit.  Mangoes have been my favorite fruit since I first ate one about 10 years ago.

I am planning to make a video of breaking the fast,  but I’m not sure.  It depends if I could wait for Julie to get home to film me.  If not, I’ll just break on my own and let you know how it goes.  I plan on having just juice for lunch, and a raw organic salad for dinner.  This seems like the perfect end to a transforming cleanse.

I loved Juice Feasting.  I was never hungry, yet cleansed significantly on some days.  I feel I benefited the most when I added HealthForce’s Healing Cleanse.  I started the cleanse on HealthForce Level 2, but decided to increase to their top level of 3 (Hardcore Cleanse).  This included ZeoForce for heavy metal detoxing and a Parasite formula.  I didn’t feel my detox symptoms increase when I included the Hardcore Cleanse. This has generally been a slow but steady progress.  What a great experience!

You can look forward tomorrow for my closing thoughts, things that were great, things that didn’t work, and my plans for my next cleanse in 2012.

I was happy to share with you and glad so many people found inspiration to begin doing this for themselves as well.  Your body/ mind/ spirit will definitely thank you.

For those who are going raw with me, I will share more about that journey and hopefully inspire you with some recipe ideas and videos of me preparing some of my favorites!  Sound good?

Breaking the Power Juice Feast | Raw Vegan Radio

Breaking the Power Juice Feast

Breaking the Power Juice Feast

by Steven Prussack
Host of Raw Vegan Radio

I broke my 23 day Power Juice Feast today!  It was an amazing journey and I accomplished my goals.  I am going to share my before/ after picture on this post.  I will share my thoughts, what worked, what didn’t, what I will do next time…and my current transition to a raw food diet.  I hope this blog continues to inspire others who are moving towards a more healthy lifestyle.

The Break

I broke the cleanse with one large organic mango, and it was incredible!  It tasted amazing and felt good to chew again.  The rest of the day consisted of a snack of one apple, an organic mixed greens salad, and an organic kale salad.  After my lunch salad, I immediately felt horrible.  My energy (that has been incredible the majority of the cleanse) dropped significantly.  I became so tired, I actually had to lie down for a nap during the afternoon.  I didn’t make it to the gym, and just felt lethargic.  My stomach has shrunk significantly, as expected, and it was surprising how little food I needed to feel satisfied.  It was a difficult transition back to eating raw foods.  I should have gone much lighter with my food choices today, so this could have been a more gentle transition back had I done things differently.  I will share more in a little bit.  First, here is a better picture of my before/ after.

My starting weight was 182.4 and ending weight is 170. I have gone from a 34 waist size to 32/33.  The best part is, I have better insight into my body and what I need to do moving forward.  I will share those thoughts in the next section of this blog post.

What Worked

  • The Juice Feast!  It was gentle, effective, and I would definitely do it again.
  • Breaking the cleanse with a fresh organic mango
  • Incorporating HealthForce Healing Cleanse Level 3 (this made the cleanse more intense, with deeper cleansing)
  • Getting a colonic during the cleanse!  Definitely amazing to clean out on that level.
  • Using organic produce (I am blessed to live in California and have access to an incredible variety of produce)
  • Being in a supportive relationship (my thanks to my wonderful family, especially my fiance Julie who supported my ups and downs throughout the cleanse)
  • The Jay Kordich PowerGrind Juicer Pro (I was using the Hurom juicer at the beginning, and found the brand-new Jay Kordich PowerGrind Juicer Pro is the BEST juicer I have ever used.  It extracted an incredible amount of juice and the clean-up was easy)
  • Scraping my tongue daily (I was able to track my body as it got cleaner, noticing less mucous on the tongue scraper as the cleanse went on)
  • Advice from David Rain, the mastermind behind “Juice Feasting”
  • Deciding to end before my family vacation (what a relief that I don’t have to figure out how I will juice and what might happen as I am skiing down a mountain!)
  • Doing a cleanse during the holiday season (great insight into human nature, how people bond over food, and a true test of how the mind could overcome temptations)
  • Reading inspiring books, such as Paul Bragg’s “Fasting” and basically the whole library of Norman Walker (favorite)
  • Using intuition to choose produce and what juice combinations to make (I had a lot of comments on how creative my juice choices were…they were all picked using intuition, including how much to put in of each fruit or vegetable)
  • Not using a Juicing book to choose recipes (intuition is key)
  • Making my own juices, instead of having them made at restaurants (just so much better when you make it yourself)

What Didn’t Work

  • Neglecting to do an enema, even though I had everything set and ready (It took so much time to juice, I just couldn’t find the time)
  • Using the recommended Flax Seed Oil for Juice Feasting (I found my body cleansed more without using oil and fats during the program)
  • Going to restaurants and watching people eat favorite foods (not recommended.  It was great to bond with family, but hard to watch people eating some of the foods I love)
  • Working full time without much breaks (my schedule is crazy and it would have been nice to have more relaxation time during the cleanse)
  • Having too many fats when breaking the cleanse (I was fine with the mango.  My other meals contained some raw fats, and this made for decreased energy and stomach pains)

What I’ll Do Next Time

  • Enemas
  • More colonics
  • Less Juice (I found that a gallon was too much.  I did fine drinking 3 quarts a day when combined with the HealthForce Healing Cleanse.  However, without the supplements one gallon worked fine)
  • More exercise (I made it to the gym much less than I thought.  My body is ready to build muscle since it is more lean.  I would like to work out much more next time.  This would include yoga, rebounding, and light weight training)
  • Less work

Moving Forward

Like I said, the benefits have been remarkable.  Since I have gained great insight into my body and previous habits, I feel entirely rebooted (as Joe Cross from “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” says).  My taste buds are sensitive to every taste.  I crave only healthy, raw organic simple foods.  I notice the difference between being hungry and eating for comfort.  I gave up habits such as green tea with caffeine and will not go back again.  I gave up unhealthy snacking at night.  I am drinking more water throughout the day.

In moving forward, I am going to continue my transition to a raw food diet.  I feel best when the foods I eat are living and full of enzymes.  I will continue to blog about this journey and look forward to sharing recipe ideas.  I am also going to make it a habit of fasting one time a week on distilled water.  I know this will keep me aligned with my new healthier lifestyle.

Thanks again for all your comments during this journey.  I would love to hear what you have in mind to align yourself with the healthiest life possible as we prepare our transition towards 2012.

With love,

Steve Prussack

Wild Edibles Interview with Sergei Boutenko | Raw Vegan Radio

Wild Edibles with Sergei Boutenko

Wild Edibles with Sergei Boutenko

Sergei Boutenko is the author of several books on nutrition and wild edibles. When Sergei was 9 years old he was diagnosed with diabetes and told to take insulin shots for the rest of his life. Instead of taking the conventional approach, Sergei changed his diet and began a vigorous exercise regime. Within several months, Sergei had reversed his symptoms and received a clean bill of health from his doctor. Sergei holds a degree in Communication from Southern Oregon University. When he is not teaching, he spends his time filming and editing educational films related to diet and edible plants.

Steven Prussack (SP): Thank you for joining us Sergei. How are you doing?

Sergei Boutenko (SB): I am doing great, how are you doing Steve?

SP: So let’s talk about your background and how you over came illness at an early age.

SB: When I was nine years old my family began to fall apart because everyone began to get sick. My dad had hyperthyroid, my mom had arrhythmia, my sister asthma and I was the catalysis, I was diagnosed with diabetes before anyone else found out they were sick. When we turned to medicine, they told us the same thing, “Take these drugs for the rest of your life and never get better.” Can you imagine why my mom looked for an alternative? She started looking and reading other books and asking doctors about diabetes and all our symptoms and she was getting nowhere so she did something radical. She started looking at healthy people on the street and when she would see someone radiant, she would approach them and say in her deep Russian accent, as we’d just immigrated at the time and say, “Hello, my name is Victoria and my son has diabetes, do you know anything about getting rid of it naturally?”

I can’t tell you how many people she scared away before she met one lady that said she knew exactly what we needed to do and that was eat fresh organic raw food. At first it all sounded crazy but she thought there seemed to be enough truth there. So she got rid of all our cooked food and smashed our microwave and pots and pans. People ask me if she really smashed the microwave and she really did. My mom is one of those ladies that needs to do what she needs to do to stick with it. So she actually put a hammer through the microwave.

SP: Wow, I thought you meant that as a figure as speech.

SB: No, definitely she knew that if she just unplugged the microwave that we’d come home and be hungry and use it. So if she put a hammer through it then we couldn’t do that. It was all foreign to us and we were very much scared by the medical industry that if we ate fruits and vegetables that we’d die. But what we observed was the opposite. Within months my diabetic symptoms started going away, my blood sugar was normal, and every member of my family had similar benefits.

I was nine years old.

In the beginning we never planned to teach about it and we just shared our story with people that wanted to listen. The more we shared it and the more people tried it, the more we realized the benefits of eating this way. Here I am 17 years later and it has been a phenomenally amazing journey.

SP: Amazing. Yeah, you had just immigrated here but you had been exposed to the SAD (standard American diet) before transitioning like this, right?

SB: 100%. We immigrated in 1990 and we had 3.5 years of eating the SAD before our health deteriorated. Just that immigrating change, where we’d go from a Russian food store that had one type of coffee, meat, maybe cabbage, beets and vodka, to a US supermarket where there is like 200 types of coffee, 50 types of cheeses and we thought that with such abundance there is no way that the Americans could do it wrong. They’d tested everything, they were much more advanced, and they would never feed their people unhealthy food. So we just tried to eat every single thing we could.

SP: Amazing. So all these years later and on the raw food path, you’ve turned into an expert on wild edibles. Does this have to do with the long hike trips your family took? Well, you tell the story.

SB: Yes, when my family hiked from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest trail was when the wild edibles’ seed was planted without me knowing it. So it’s 1998, my mother decided that eating raw wasn’t extreme enough, now we wanted to hike a trail that spans roughly 3000 miles and we want to do it all on raw food. In the beginning we actually wanted to do it bare foot but that didn’t work out. So, we had never hiked before. You can’t carry 6 months of food supply on your back so we packed food parcels and had a friend ship them along the way however we very much underestimated how much five hungry hikers could eat – my father, mother, sister, our cousin and myself. What happened is that we’d hike for four days and eat all our food that was meant to last seven days and have three days to hike with zero food. As fun as fasting is, it’s harder when you’re physically exerting yourself. So, we had a choice. We either needed to quit the trail and realize that we needed to plan better or we’d improvise. Luckily the Universe put us in touch with this man that was hiking and was a wild edible enthusiast. He said, “Are you kidding me? You guys are lacking food when there is so much here around us? And best of all, it’s free.” We started incorporating this way of eating and towards the end of the trail we were eating 70-80% off wild edibles and it was great. Our health further improved and we’ve never been the same since.

SP: Why is it important to learn about wild edibles?

SB: There are so many reasons why it is important to learn about wild edibles. The most obvious one for me currently, with the state of the economy, is cheap nutritious food that is accessible to every single person. If you go to a Whole Foods or another health food store the quality produce are very expensive. I’ve seen kale sell for $6 a bunch and maybe most families can’t afford that. When you turn to weeds and wild edibles you are getting the same quality if not better for free. Free food. Also, in the studies that I have conducted in wild edible nutrition I have realized they are much more preserved the way nature intended so humans haven’t altered them. In a timeline, 1000 years ago a dandelion was what lettuce was, there was no romaine lettuce. And over time someone decided that they were too bitter and they were tired of eating dandelion. So they would harvest that new seed and each time they harvested the new seed they would take the sweetest seed, therefore modifying the plant. 1000 years later you have this lettuce that is delicious, it was much broader leaves but unfortunately the quality of nutrient suffered immensely. So when you eat a dandelion from nature, it isn’t just a pesky weed that messes up your front lawn, it is an amazing immune system boost. It has way more chlorophyll nutrient than any kind of lettuce you can buy at the store.

SP: What are some of the other health benefits of wild edibles?

SB: The biggest health benefit is that when you begin eating wild edibles you increase the amount of food that you ingest. Side note: there is this guy, Daniel Mormon and ethno botanist devoted his life to studying what Native Americans eat. Mind you Native Americans didn’t have all the health problems we do, prior to being introduced to the way we eat. Daniel Mormon found out that Native Americans would eat 882 plants a year and use another 2000+ for medicinal purposes, as herbs, and for ceremonies, all together they incorporated over 4000 types of foods in their diet. Fast-forward to today and Michael Pollan author of Omnivores Today writes that the average human in modern day eats 30 plants per year. The amount of types of food that we consume has grossly shrunk. When you eat wild edibles you’re upping your food supply but hundreds if not thousands of different foods and increasing your chances of getting calcium, vitamin D, etc. Also, the wild edibles have longer root systems and are able to go beyond the depleted topsoil and draw out vital nutrients.

SP: Amazing, some of us don’t even think about this. We are so used to going to the farmer’s market, or Whole Foods and local organic stores and you can’t get the variety you’re talking about here. So how and where do we start learning about what we can eat and what we can’t?

SB: The learning process is a little bit difficult at first like most things are and you might doubt yourself and say that you don’t have a degree in botany. But I am here to tell you that everybody can learn about wild edibles safely. The best thing to do is to follow these three rules: Don’t eat something you don’t know what it is. You can watch my YouTube video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIaOhjIDD-8] that shows comical situations you can get in if you disregard that rule. Rule #2 is eating plants in small quantities the first time. As an example, I know that dandelions are 100% edible but I ask students of mine to try a small amount to see how their bodies take it so to make sure they don’t have adverse effects. Rule #3 is that you never mix your edibles unless you’ve had experience with them. If you go out in the woods and pick five or ten wild edibles and make a salad and if you happen to have a negative reaction you won’t know which plant you reacted to.

So those are the ground rules and with today’s access of information it’s pretty simple to start learning about wild edibles. You could pick up a good book or google most edible plants of your area and I recommend that everyone do this. For example, I live in Ashland, Oregon and I google edible plants in my area, I get a list and I print it off and it’s free and I stick it somewhere I look and everyday I learn one or two plants. While I do that I can also google ‘most poisonous plants of southern Oregon’ and there are a lot fewer poisonous ones so I start studying those as well. Slowly but surely, if you did that for 1 year you’d know 365 new plants and that’d be 365 new foods you added to your diet. For those that want even more convenience I recently released an iPhone application that puts all of my knowledge in the palm of your hand, it sells on iTunes for $2.99.

SP: Wow, $2.99 so if you go on the App Store and search ‘wild edibles’ you’ll be able to pull that up.

SB: It has photos, descriptions and recipes to identify and use the plant. Everything you’ll ever need.

SP: For those living in cities, how do you recommend we find these edibles and know if they’ve been sprayed or tainted?

SB: I am so glad you asked this question. When you live in cities you have to be more careful, it is definitely possible and there are many people that live in cities and can benefit. When you live in cities and are around human toxins and pesticides you are in more trouble than if you ate something that was just medicinal and get a stomachache from it. My best advice is that you harvest wild seeds and grow them in your garden. I found out that my wild edibles take virtually zero maintenance as opposed to my garden that I need to water, weed and cultivate. So I ordered some seeds from www.seedsofchange.com – lambsquarters, chickweed and plantain. I buried them in my garden and fast-forward a few months and I am in this wild edible forest and I go in there every morning with my blender and I chop wild edible weeds and make a delicious green smoothie. If you don’t even have garden space you do it in pots on your windowsill or on your balcony. It is accessible to everybody.

SP: What would you choose to look up on seedsforchange.com for wild edibles?

SB: I think their selection is pretty limited but they do generally have two types of purslane, they have golden purslane and lambsquarters, which is a must and chickweed. Another way is to find an organic farm near by and tell them that you’re a wild edible enthusiast and ask them if you can help them weed in exchange for the weeds. I say this because all organic farms are plagued by edible weeds. If you took any organic farm you could see that over half the food is unintentional and it is so abundant that it is a great way to utilize wild edibles.

SP: Smart, but you’d have to have a good knowledge about which weeds are edible.

SB: You would and you can talk to some of the farmers that are there. They are very knowledgeable. You could bring my App with you or come to one of my wild edibles events or find somebody local to you who eat wild edibles.

SP: Very cool, great tips. Anything else helpful to add?

SB: I’d like to say that I put out a lot of YouTube videos online on wild edibles and you can join my facebook group ‘Wild Edibles with Sergei Boutenko’ and every week there is a new video and it is a great way to learn. If you can’t come to me or I can’t go to you, we can meet on the Internet. I try very hard to film plants in a way that everybody can recognize them and talk about the identifying characteristics, so not to confuse them.

SP: Do you think the green smoothies are the best way to consume these?

SB: I think green smoothies are the best way to start experimenting with wild edibles, because the edibles are so nutritious and they’re so hearty and sometimes bitter and tastes we’re not familiar with. So with blending them with fruit in a smoothie the fruit masks the strong tastes and you are still able to get the benefits. After maybe a month of this you will find that you crave bitters and you can chop dandelions in your salad and the taste won’t affect you in the same way it would’ve a month prior. I think green smoothies are the gateway into enjoying them however you like. I will also say that blending dandelions in a pesto is a great way to eat them, the fats in the pesto will neutralize the bitterness. Pine nuts, olive oil, lemon juice, basil and dandelion.

SP: Let’s talk about raw food a little bit. Some people we’ve been talking to on this program are doing 100% raw and some are doing high percentage raw. What are you doing?

SB: Well, for 14 years of my life I was 100% raw with no exception and I would freak out if I thought that the almonds might be slightly roasted. And I just got too stressed out so I knew that I wouldn’t live forever and there was no point stressing out. I’ll give you an example, I was okay with experimenting with my body and there was a time I was living only on oranges because I thought orange juice is so healthy and I thought I’d be better off for it. It actually damaged my teeth a little bit and there were times I’d only eat fruit or only eat greens and I have basically come around to the idea that it is all a balance and you have to find your specific balance. Today I would say my diet is 85-90% raw, with a lot of greens but occasionally I will eat a steamed sweet potato or vegetables or a little bit of quinoa and I find this helps me stay away from eating the tons of nuts that I would otherwise be eating and overall I feel better because of it.

SP: That’s a great point. Some people get caught up in that, especially when they’re transition to raw and making high fat gourmet meals that combine so many kinds of fats and they find they’re lethargic and their digestion slows down and I think what you’re saying is a great way to look at it.

SB: Yeah, that is the only way I think to look at it. I feel that my family started the whole 100% raw to some extent and we’ve kind of backed off of it and that is just the learning process. You do something and find there is a better way and hopefully change.

SP: Yeah, but there is no denying that 100% raw reversed your health problems.

SB: Absolutely not. The way I look at it now is that if you have health problems right now then 100% raw is the way to go and it is more like a cleanse. You juice and drink smoothies and eat a super clean diet. Then for the long run, I incorporate some steamed things because I find that I don’t gorge when I do that and I don’t eat as many nuts, as I said earlier.

SP: Here we are in 2012, what are your plans for the future?

SB: My plan is to continue what I am doing. I am going to write a book on wild edibles, because in my book Fresh there is just a chapter or two dedicated to it. One of my most profound thoughts right now is that when you walk into a grocery store, a health food one or conventional store, it is amazing to me that 80-90 % of the food is not meant to be consumed. When things have been processed and chemicals added to it, I am shocked that we consume it and it is so unhealthy for us and I want to put that down on paper. How opposite that is from nature, when you walk into a forest and see all the wild edibles growing, you put them into your mouth and they’re 100% good for you and they are meant to be consumed. For example, I was watching the show How it’s made episode on aluminum foil and we use aluminum foil on food, after we bake, and at every step of this aluminum foil process they were dumping heavy grade commercial chemicals and solvents into it and every single step involved toxins and at no point did they clean it off, they just rolled it up and sold it to us. Wow, that makes me never want to use aluminum foil ever again. Yet it is USDA accepted that you put it on your food.

The best thing about eating raw food is that there is no waste and I have been thinking about that since day one. You buy the avocado, lettuce and tomato and you eat everything you want and maybe have some skins that you can litter anywhere you want because they’ll decompose, no plastic, and no resources, with the exception of watering the plant. That is so important for me. When we ate cooked food or processed foods everything was packaged and we had to take out the garbage 3 times a week and presently I make one garage bag every 2 weeks. I think that says it.

SP: Yeah, that says it all. Great message. As we wind down anything you want to share Sergei about raw food, transitioning, staying raw or how to have a balanced lifestyle because I know it’s not all about the food.

SB: I am really glad you asked that because sometimes within the raw food circles people tend to get divided, some say eat only fruit, some say don’t eat fruit and they flounder their counterparts. In today’s day and age where we have so many things dividing us, we don’t need another one. This is a journey for everybody and at the end of life we’ll know what we did right and what we could have done better. There is no way of knowing that my way is the right way so I just invite people to remember that and be a little more lenient to the people around them and realize that because we’re all different that makes life interesting. If we were all the same life wouldn’t be as fun.

I like how David Wolfe says it, “My message is like a CD, some tracks you’ll like and some you’ll have to skip” and I think that’s a great way of looking at it.

SP: Some may be revised in an updated version. That’s why we say to use your intuition and it’s about self-empowerment, don’t you think?

SB: I think so.

SP: What works for one many not work for another but there is a lot of information out there and we all have something to share. Thank you for your message and all the great work you’re doing. Sergei, it is an honor to have you and see you grow over the years and see you evolve into such a conscious being. Thank you for the inspiring work, I myself want to learn about wild edibles.
